Dress, Belt and Clutch: And Other Stories

Shoes: Zara | Earrings: Stradivarius

Hey lovelies, hope you all are well and have had a great week thus far. I can only but hope the same momentum that has brought us to this day will see us through the rest of the week. Although it’s rather unfortunate the lads won’t be bringing football home (I had to revise this post to share my disappointment, haha 🙁 ). Nonetheless, they did play amazingly well, so they deserve utmost commendation.

My word for you today:

Show love, extend grace and encourage peace.

This life we live is far too short to not make the most of. Live your best life, hunny. Live your best life!

Onto today’s post shall we!?

As we currently are in the wedding and celebratory season, there seems to be some level of social appraisal for what is and isn’t appropriate. Such ideas of the ideal guest, most appropriate seasonal colours, abstinence from colours that might not appear celebratory or seem ambiguous; all these, I choose to remain aloof of. I’m not to be misunderstood here, I still will look suitably dressed for the occasion, although subjectively.

Over the weekend, a friend made a passing comment on how she loves me in black, and understands why it is my favourite colour. To this particular friend, I’ve never expressed such to; her judgement was based on observation and assumption. Was she wrong? No, I do like the colour black (amongst other colours). In contrast to the negative connotations attributed to the colour, it equally speaks highly of elegance, sophistication and strength. If you are still wondering where I’m headed with this, yes I would wear an all black outfit to any ceremony; wedding included. I very much appreciate its volatility when it comes to styling. Selecting the right structured garment, right textures for the occasion, flattering accessories and maybe a complimentary pop of colour to achieve balance, you are well on your way.

Am I alone on this? Can we agree to disagree? Please share your thoughts below on whether there are colours you deem inappropriate for occasions. Your thoughts sure will be enlightening.

Be Right Back,

Funmi xx

  1. Come ALL THE WAY THROUGGGHH Ms Funmi Fums!!!! And guuurl, you’re singing to the choir, I once wore all-black to a wedding. However, I detracted funeral vibes by zazzing it up with a white blazer, colourful fascinator etc.
I believe you’ve added colour to your outfit by your charming and bold coloured lil’ bag and may I say this outfit is da bom diggy and deserves it’s wedding outing! Have a lovely wkend. X

  2. First of all, your dress is absolutely gorgeous and so are you. In answer to your question, no, you’re not alone! *raises hand*
I agree 100% with you, black is one of top 3 favourite colours and I wear it pretty much every other day. It’s elegance in its simplest and purest expression.
I’m from Argentina and the “colour code” for weddings is not as strict as it is here in the UK or some other parts of the world. In Argentina is normal to attend a wedding in literally any colour, including black.
A few weeks ago I posted on my blog OOTD pics of me wearing what I considered a great option for a wedding guest, which was a classy dark navy blue dress with golden embroidery, and some people told me the dress was beautiful but too dark for such occasions. So yep, I hear you girl! 🙂

  4. You look absolutely STUNNING in this dress – you should definitely be able to wear this to any wedding as I can almost guarantee the style is more appropriate than many other dresses at weddings! Adding little pops of colour to an otherwise all-black outfit like you did with that pink purse makes it even more appropriate for any event!

  5. Okay wow wow wow! This dress is absolutely awesome and you look fantastic!! And I totally agree, I think a ceremony – also a wedding – shouldn’t really be about colors. Instead, you just should feel great and enjoy it wherever you are invited. I think Victoria Beckham proved it that you can even show up in a black dress to a royal wedding. She looked awesome because it was what she felt to dress like. 🙂
    Happy weekend dear!

  6. You look great Love the outfit. I personally love wearing black but I’ve moved to 2 really hot destinations the last few years that I have avoided it more. I would personally wear it much more if I could handle the sun in them.
